CANON BORING WORKS
1779

A CANON BORING WORKS HAS BEEN ERECTED IN BURCROFT BY WALKERS OF ROTHERHAM.
EIGHTY CANON ON NELSON'S SHIP 'VICTORY' AT THE BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR WERE MANUFACTURED BY WALKERS.

We think that the canons were test fired on completion of the boring works as canon balls have been found on Wingate Hill.  The canon were probably fired from the river bank into the side of the hill wich has a steep bank.
